Time Management Tips for In-Class Essays In-class essays can be stressful, especially if theyre timed. Although they are short and sweet, they can also be a great way for you to show your knowledge of the topic at hand. Here are four time management tips for in-class essays. 1. Look for keywords Before diving into the writing, read the essay question carefully, looking for keywords that will guide the structure and content of your piece. Pay special attention to the verbs in the question, such as compare and contrast, discuss, evaluate, summarize, or justify. Looking for directives and knowing what they mean should help you formulate a gameplan and feel more confident about the essay youll write. Try annotating the question itself; underline and circle important words in the essay prompt itself to make sure you dont miss anything important. This is especially useful when the question is long and/or includes more than one part, and it may help to quickly jumpstart your essay. 2. Jot down notes After reading the question, take time to quickly jot notesdown of whatever comes to your mind related to the prompt. Write down quotes, thoughts for and against a topic, and concrete examples. Think of this as a free-write: a way to gather ideas without the pressure of organization or accuracy. Keep your mind open and use associative logic dont worry too much about whether or not youll end up including all of these ideas; the point is to gather as large of a pool of ideas as you can that youll be able to draw from later. 3. Make an outline This is arguably one of the most important time management tips for in-class essays. Once youve finished note-taking, start organizing your thoughts into an outline. You may feel tempted to immediately start writing the essay, but outlines are a great time management strategy: they help you structure your writing and give you a solid direction to follow so youre able to write more efficiently in the long run. Depending on the essay question itself, youll probably want to write two to four body paragraphs. When making your outline, decide on your thesis and a few points to back it up, which will be the topic sentences of your body paragraphs. Also, while youre outlining, dont forget to think about a logical order for your body paragraphs think about how your points build on each other in the most effective way. 4. Budget your time Keep track of your timeas youre planning and writing your essay. First, ensure you know how long youll be given and how youll keep a time check: the wall clock, your watch, or, if youre using a computer, the time in the corner of the screen. Some teachers and test proctors will keep time on the board or will give a five or 10 minute warning before the end of the allotted writing period. Once you know the total time given, plan approximate amounts of time for note-taking, outlining, writing, and proofreading/editing. Youll want to spend the bulk of your time writing, and dont forget to budget around five minutes for proofreading and editing. In addition to the above tips, pay close attention in class for similar assignments that can mentally prepare you for in-class writing. Here are the final two tips: #4: Make Efficient Use of Resources As you undoubtedly know or will soon discover, there is a plethora of available resources for MCAT preparation. When wading through this morass and attempting how to best spend your hard earned dollars, the first step is determining which items are best suited for the job. For this purpose, rely extensively on reviews and word-of-mouth. Once you’ve narrowed it down, I recommend purchasing one (or more, depending on whether the subjects are divided) quality review book â€" one that presents all the essential information in a comprehensive but understandable format. Many of these printed recently include several practice tests, which is fine, but if you can find a stand-alone model with just information, they tend to contain more of it. Then buy up or find as many possible sample exams with complete explanations as you can. The key is to combine these two resources into one powerhouse of information synthesis. Instead of taking massive piles of original notes, why not use the extensive outlines already provided, and simply fill them in with other useful information? And what better place to get that information than the thorough explanations that accompany the answers to all those practice questions you’re already going through? Together, these two powerful assets can become a substantial yet efficient studying machine. #5: Use Your Anxiety Anxiety is nobody’s natural friend â€" it can be painful and disheartening, sometimes worse. It comes with the territory in test preparation and studying, and there’s really no way around that. Nor would you want a way around that, because while it can sometimes appear meaningless, a certain amount is required to succeed in the world of science and medicine. As much as we may detest it at times, anxiety is a built-in motivator that helps drive us, often through less-than-optimal circumstances. Use this knowledge to your advantage. If you can harness this energy and turn it into productivity, it will likely pay dividends, academically and otherwise. Exactly how to do this is of course the tricky part, and is entirely personal. But in learning to accept a certain level of anxiety rather than fear it, you can absolutely use it to your benefit. Conclusion There is any number of other suggestions â€" some of them good, many of them less so - that you might heed during your preparation efforts. The key is to personalize all of the above and make it your own, to whatever extent possible. And trust your gut instincts â€" more often than not, if it feels good and right, whether in studying or in life, it probably is. This can be confusing for students who are trying to compare the old test with the new one or who may be taking the exam multiple times. Its important for students to understand fully what they will be expected to do on test day so that they are prepared and confident. The changes to the ACT are not as significant as those applied to the SAT, but they are worth knowing about its never too late or too early to book your private Costa Mesa ACT tutor from TutorNerds. 1. Scoring guidelines This is where it gets a little confusing. The current essay is graded on a scale of 1 to 36, while in the past it was graded on a scale of 1 to 12. The current exam is scored based on four subdomains. These domains, as stated on ACT’s website, evaluate the students ability to do several things: “Analyze and evaluate multiple perspectives on a complex issue, State and develop your own perspective on the issue, Explain and support your ideas with logical reasoning and detailed examples, Clearly and logically organize your ideas in an essay, Effectively communicate your ideas in standard written English”. On the current test, two expert graders will give the student a score of 1 to 6. So, each domain will have a minimum score of 2 and a maximum score of 12. The final composite score can be a maximum of 36. Its critical to note that the scores arent simply added up to a final score. On the old ACT, the essay was scored by two graders, who each gave a score of 1 to 6 adding up to a composite score of 2 to 12 (READ: ACT Aspire: What is it?). 2. The prompt A portion of the current sample prompt, directly from the ACT website, reads: “Write a unified, coherent essay in which you evaluate multiple perspectives on the increasing presence of intelligent machines.” Students need to have developed strong analytical and persuasive writing skills. Most students would agree that this type of prompt is more complicated than the prompts from the old ACT, which included asking writers to take a position on topics such as school uniforms or whether or not technology should be censored in the classroom. A major change is the addition of three sample perspectives, which students will have to analyze. In the past, students just read the prompt and responded to their writing. The essay will also require extensive reading comprehension and advanced analytical skills. 3. Time allotted The present ACT essay will need to be completed within 40 minutes. This includes trying to read and comprehend the prompt, develop a position, make an outline, write, and edit. This is 10 minutes longer than the old ACT essay which allowed students 30 minutes to prepare and write. Students shouldn’t be fooled into thinking that they have an extra 10 minutes to bide their time. Rather, they will be responding to a more complicated prompt and will need this additional time to analyze and create an outline (READ: ACT Tips from a Private Irvine Tutor). 4. How to prep Students are encouraged to sit down with their Costa Mesa ACT tutor or study group and create a plan of action for their writing portion test prep. Because the ACT essay is now graded on four separate domains: “ideas and analysis, development and support, organization, and language use and conventions” (taken straight from the ACT website) students are encouraged to prepare to utilize all of these skills. In person, theres also no problem with static on the connection or Skype fails.Here are some places to find both, as well as the pluses and minuses for each option:Craigslist (or local equivalent). Craigslist tutors are easy to find, often have availability and are usually the cheapest options. But they have the least amount of vetting. You could be getting a trained language teacherâ€"or it could be someone who dropped out of school after fifth grade and has never taught anyone before (okay, thats not super likely, but certainly possible). If you find a tutor on Craigslist, you should be extra careful about making sure that the tutor knows what he or she is doing. Some local Craigslist equivalents are 58.com in China, leboncoin.fr in France and loquo.com in Spain.Language schools. Language schools are probably the most expensive and least flexible option, but theres assurance that the teacher will be qualified. Language schools include cultural institutions like the Alliance Française, the Confucius Institute, the Goethe Institute and the Cervantes Institute.Universities. Go to campus and look for foreign students who want to earn some extra money, or even visiting scholars. Students usually wont charge as much as a trained teacher, but also wont be as able to explain grammar depending on the level of education and training theyve received so far. If you choose to work with a foreign student who doesnt have experience teaching, focus on working on pronunciation and speaking with them. You could look for offerings in the various departments devoted to language and culture, review the bulletin boards around campus and even post a seeking language tutor flyer on these bulletin boards yourself.italki.  The website italki has both community tutors (untrained) and professional teachers, all of whom teach online only. Evaluate Your OptionsInevitably you’ll end up with lots of teachers who seem fine. When it comes time to contact some of them, here are things you can  ask to see how well their teaching style will actually help you.What does a typical tutoring session look like?  You want someone who focuses on speaking and pronunciation during the actual session, with things like pronunciation drills, reading aloud and having you do prepared and unprepared monologues. You should be talking at least twice as much as the tutor during the actual session.Do they assign homework and correct it outside of your tutoring time? Youll also need to work on writing and grammar, but most of that should be done outside of your tutoring time. Ideally, your tutor will correct your work beforehand and go over it with you in the first five minutes of each lesson. Ask them if this is something theyll do with yo u.Can he or she explain grammar concepts?  If youre paying a teacher, he or she should understand the grammar concepts well enough to explain them. Dont fall into the common trap of assuming that any native speaker can explain grammarâ€"most of them cant. It takes special training to be able to explain grammar to a language learner. If you just want conversation practice you dont need a grammar ninja, but you should also be paying substantially less if your tutor cant do anything but chat with you.Do they have a set program or tailor their program to you?  Many language tutor have set packs and they insist that you choose a tutoring program. While that does show a certain level of organization, it fails to take advantage of the main reason for choosing a tutor over a classâ€"you get control over what you work on each lesson.
